Lucknam Park Hotel - Peter Roege of Exhausto reports on a new way to entice visitors

A magnificent five-star hotel near Chippenham has installed chimney fan systems to improve the decorative quality and flame effect of a remarkable 6- metre wide gas-fired flame bed that gives an intimate atmosphere to its spectacular new luxury spa facility. The flame bed, designed to provide a live flame pattern as a key feature of the pool area, consists of four 1.5mtr burners in series making a total flame length of 6 metres.

Lucknam Park Hotel and Spa is an elegant country-house hotel with Michelin Star dining. It is 6 miles (9.7 km) from Bath within a private 500-acre estate with a walled garden. The new luxury spa features the exclusive body products of Ann Semonin and Carita, Paris and has a brasserie with an open kitchen. Sean Treaddell of Burning Desires, the specialist installers of the flame bed, explained that it has four gas burners, each with its own individual chimney fan to optimise the flame and ensure the best possible visual effect. The designer of the spa wanted a spectacular flame pattern as a key feature of the pool area.

“It is unusual to have four chimney fans above one feature – the key thing is the finite balance of the fans and the airflow through the fire aperture – you could only achieve that with really precise individual electronic control of the fans, and that’s what the system that was designed and installed by Whiteside Chimneys Ltd Preston, provides” he said.

A fifth chimney fan system has been installed on an unusually large 500mm diameter flue that rises from a very large log-burning fireplace in the hotel bar and lounge area. The chimney fan system here ensures that any smoke or fumes from the open fireplace are safely extracted to the open air and that no dust from the fire is deposited in the room.

“The flue is so big that you could stand inside it” explained Sean Treaddell.

The chimney fan system creates a fully controlled draught in the chimney, dramatically improving combustion, reducing smoke output and ensuring that whatever smoke, dust and fumes are created go up the chimney, not into the room. The draught is electronically controlled, guaranteeing the effectiveness of the chimney independent of wind, the weather, the size of the chimney or the location of the fireplace. A controlled draught also makes it much easier to light the solid fuel fire – the user can alter the speed of the chimney fan and therefore control the chimney draught from the room.

Exhausto supplies chimney fans in a wide variety of models, with versions for open gas fires as well as solid fuel. Their chimney fan systems for gas fires even turn off the gas supply to the fire if the chimney becomes obstructed, and are the only systems available on the market that have a fully certified failsafe facility.
